GREAT WESTERN RAILWAY Broadgauge

Prior to the end of the 19th century, the GWR had considerable Broadgauge (7 foot or 2.134m) track and rolling stock in operation. This Broadgauge was the invention of Isambard Kingdom Brunell, who also invented the first steam ship (The Great Western) the first Iron ship (the SS Great Britain) as well as some notable Iron Bridges. This was the time of huge development in transport for the Nation, and expansion Overseas. The Broadgauge was just a small portion of Brunell influence on the developing World.

This configuration was successful, owing to the lower friction and higher speed it allowed. At around 1890 standard (4' 8 1/2) gauge was adopted by most of the country, and in response, the GWR converted its Broadgauge over to 'standard' over a period of a few days (a weekend !!) in 1892. So ended the Broadgauge that lasted some 60 years, had some 4000 miles of track from Plymouth in the south to London and the North. The resulting thousands of locos, coaches and wagons were either scrapped or converted. I do have some pictures of the conversion, including moving track and the scrapping/conversion of rolling stock to standard gauge, Board of Directors minutes and letters to the GWR Employees. Anyone requiring such pictures should email me for the link. I have endeavoured to capture that moment in time for the true GWR TRAINZ enthusiast as there was a large gap in the TRAINZ assets available for Broadgauge. This pack, along with the next release, will address the matter, and will allow the user to enjoy another facet of this tremendous simulation.
